Enduring Success addresses a key question in business today How can companies succeed over time? To learn the source of enduring greatness, author Christian Stadler directed a team of eight researchers in a six-year study of some of Europe's oldest and most stellar companies, targeting nine that have survived for more than 100 years and have significantly outperformed the market over the past fifty years. Readers may wonder, "Why European companies?" Yet Europe is the ideal place to seek the key to long-term success; half of the Fortune Global 500 companies that are 100 years old or older can be found in Europe, as can 72 of the 100 oldest family businesses in the world.

Fifteen years after Collins and Porras' Built to Last, this new book incorporates fresh insights from management science and provides the first non-US perspective on long-range success. Through Stadler's study, a counterintuitive story emerges The greatest companies adapt to a constantly changing environment by being intelligently conservative. Enduring Success provides a coherent framework, grounded in five principles and practical concepts, for business leaders who are prepared to learn from the history of some of the world's greatest institutions. Would not recommend. The author repeatedly uses the same examples throughout the book and they all felt incredibly drawn out and longer than they needed to be. It felt like the author was just trying to make the book longer than it should be. Although it does have some interesting insights the language and terminology used in the book are not up to par and makes this a non read. It felt as if I was reading a book from someone still in college instead of a specialist in the field.

Enduring Success What We Can Learn from the History of Outstanding Corporations (Audible Audio Edition) Christian Stadler Kent Jones University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews

A real eye-opener! Suddenly it seems so obvious why some companies fail and others succeed. I also appreciated that this is a book accessible to those less familiar with big business and management sciences. I can promise you will enjoy this book and pick up a few new ideas. Not something I can say of every book I read.
It is a good book, with very interesting insights but could be more consistent and better structured.
Some examples are quite repetitive and unfortunately is based on a short sample of companies.
Professor Stadler's interview on "Enduring Success" ran as the Rorotoko Cover Feature on February 07, 2011 (and can be read in the Rorotoko archive).
Did you ever wonder what the average age of a company is? A mere 12.5 years. In his new book Christian Stadler explains what you need to do to stay around a little longer. He suggests that you should (1) exploit before you explore, (2) diversify into related businesses, (3) manage finances conservatively, (4) learn from the past, and (5) change in a culturally sensitive manner. The book provides capturing anecdotes from 100 year old companies to illustrate these principles. It is an entertaining read which I have no doubt you will enjoy.
Straight forward, full with practical examples, and still solid! I previously read `Good to Great' and liked it. But this is better. The book has more depth, and feels more honest. Unlike many other business books it does not claim to provide the ultimate answer. This does not mean that the author shies away from having an opinion and backing it up with tons of examples, but he acknowledges that this is his interpretation and due to the nature of the research (case study research) he does not provide proven hypotheses.

So what did I like most? Innovation is a hot topic at the moment and the general impression is that a great idea will make you a millionaire. Great companies in this study were also innovative but what quickly becomes apparent is that the real driver of success is the exploitation of an innovation. This is what separates the great from the good.

In any case, this is a book you should read!
Fascinating insight and practical learnings in a European business environment. Definitely worth reading.
Enduring Success provides solid data-based conclusions on proven corporate management strategies comparing companies with long histories. No flash in the pan stuff here, we're talking one hundred years or more! And the authors relate their similar and contrary findings to other widely read researchers from recent decades. Well worth the read. Enjoy.
